Since they mentioned Avatar… rant initiate!
I thoroughly enjoyed ATLA Live Action. .
My dumbass went to Reddit, saw a bunch of people calling it trash and was like, “Aw man, that’s easily my favorite Nickelodeon show… and one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. Oh well, guess I can’t watch the live action.”
Then one night I got extremely high and questioned why I hadn’t even bothered to see how bad it was. So I put it on. Thirty minutes later I’m like, “Man, it’s gonna be so awful when all the stuff Reddit said was bad happens.” But it never did. The whole show was amazing…The casting was uncanny, the actors talented at capturing their characters. Some of the action scenes rival the cartoon. I can’t wait for seasons two and three, the season one arch was great, in season two we finally get Toph!
Relying on reviews from forums is something I really gotta stop doing.
I’m a bit confused about what it’s for. Are they intending on expanding anything from the original series? If not, what does it offer over the original?
To be clear here I’m not saying it’s bad. I have no idea. I haven’t watched it and don’t care all that much for the original either (which, to clarify again, does not mean I think the original is bad, it was just never special to me personally). I just don’t understand the intention.
More specifically though, there’s this sense of media hierarchy where some mediums are considered superior/more digestible/mainstream than others. Think back to the 2000s, everyone wanted that live action cowboy bebop remake with Keanu reeves, same kind of thing.
I couldn’t tell you why this exists, very often the original media was good because of the medium it was presented in. I’d argue avatar is one of those cases, but that’s me.
Hm, I think that’s a very individual question, because what a piece of art is “for” is often different for each person experiencing it. That said, for me it’s there for the opportunity to re-experience a world I enjoyed so much the first time around, brought to life by whatever visual magic producers use.
As far as a general intention, I’m not sure there is one, cynically I could say “to make money” but I think the real answer is “who knows!” I don’t believe they intend to expand or modify much beyond what is necessary to adapt it, I think its just a recreation.
Also, you can say you dislike it, I’m not an internet warrior, I understand that one person can enjoy something while the person sitting next to them hates it, and as far as I am concerned they are both right.
I’m happy you liked it, but its really quite bad. It ruins character arcs, has bad acting and terrible dialogue, and it apparently never heard of the show don’t tell rule.
That’s a hot take. I couldn’t make it through the trailer when they mispronounced the main character’s name. How could they have respected any of the rest of the material? I’ll still pass on watching it.

Ah, I never noticed as I always avoid trailers. I just watch the show and stop watching if it’s bad. And I try to leave a lot of room for artistic interpretation but tbh with avatar I didn’t end up needing it.
Coming into it my main fear was that they’d misrepresent a character’s motivations, back story, or change some other pivotal thing that would disrupt the mood of the show. At the end of season one I just found myself wanting to watch the animated series again to compare the two some more.
Idk, it’s perfectly fine to dislike a show and I enjoy exploring critiques (after I’ve seen the show in question), I am quite glad I was one of the ones who enjoyed it. The environments, the brooding, the constant fleeing and threat of the fire nation, uncle iroh, and I think they’re doing a good job representing the past avatars as conflicting figures who disagree on many things… and I can even see Zuko’s character decelopment (and azula…) coming together.

Well we can hope they take some of these lessons to heart in the upcoming seasons.
I love the source material so much that it seems like I may be taste-blind to the flaws. I’m pretty thankful for that.
