I think the punishment aspect is pretty intrinsic though. You don’t get to enjoy normal things. You get stripped searched. You’re separated from loved ones. You have no privacy. You can’t go outside on a whim. And the food sucks. Being forced to work doesn’t need to be in the list.

It takes a 2/3rds majority of both legislative chambers, and 2/3rds of the states to pass a new amendment. There’s not any question as to why we’re still stuck with that line in an amendment passed in the 1860’s.

California has never before held a referendum on slavery and was admitted as a state in 1850 as a “Free State” because of a compromise on the national level.

In 2024, they voted for slavery. They can no longer hide behind the onerous process of editing the 13th amendment. They specifically voted in favor of slavery.

They can’t refuse any job short of firefighting. They will be punished for doing so. Reports from former inmates indicate punishments range from solitary to beatings.

You can absolutely still have volunteer programs like that. Volunteering to work time off faster shows a willingness to work on the problems that landed you in prison. Forcing it just creates misery.

And yet, California voted affirmatively to be a slave state in 2024. I did not have that on my 2024 bingo card.

They’re in prison. Forcing them to do anything is wrong. We’ve already taken their freedom. Using them as labor is morally wrong. Especially when you look at the punishments like solitary.

Oh it’s worse than that. California voted to make more homeless people, expand the three strikes system by turning some misdemeanors into felonies, and voted itself a slave state to take advantage of all that new prison population.

All that’s left is to privatize the pipeline.

But it’s okay, they removed the defunct ban on same sex marriage so they’re still progressive! Yay!

That is absolutely not how that works. Also while they’re conservative, they are not fans of Trump. The active duty military voted blue in 2020.

I’m not the other poster. But we already have examples of the military standing up to Trump during his previous term. We know he’s going to have to wade into the leadership pool to find sympathetic leaders.

Sure, great, but the military isn’t about to hand waive anything. They will send the MPs to arrest soldiers for desertion. They will process people out of the military for following illegal orders.

They aren’t robots and they have decades of experience in slow walking stuff, malicious compliance, and straight up refusing illegal orders. There isn’t just one officer to fire either. It would take them years to build a military willing to be used against the American people.

They can have a DOJ task force up and running in a month. They can be recruiting veterans in 2 months. They can use the surplus system to transfer armored vehicles to the DOJ in about 6 months if someone is dragging their heels. And the military is actually in the middle of getting shiny new armored vehicles so seeing M113 APCs showing up on the surplus list isn’t even going to raise eyebrows.

I sincerely hope they smash their heads against the military for another 4 years. But by the end of his last term they figured out they could use a DOJ task force to beat up and abduct protestors. Just adding surplus military equipment and Trump cultists to that isn’t going to be hard to figure out. Stop trying to put the military in a hole it’s not going to easily fit into and start looking at what’s actually likely.
