    What beautiful words, wish his optimism was more true. Reality seems capitalism was able to crush his vision of the future.

      There’s still many that share this vision, but I think the neoliberal consensus did the most damage to it in the broad culture. The conflicts within the movement in the 1910s as well, petty in light of present day circumstance. The book Capitalist Realism is about this idea that there’s no alternative to capitalism.

      In the US the major parties definitely don’t cater to left ideas anymore, there’s only a few Democrats who’ve managed to get elected that purport socialist sympathies. I think Sanders has a picture of Debs in his office.
