But that doesn’t appear to be how it works on other posts.

Why would you see a reply that wasn’t directed at you? I don’t understand what you’re trying to accomplish. What did you expect to happen? And what happened instead?
I can only see comments that are replies. No other comments on posts show up even though I know they’re there.
How are comments different from replies?
If you open a post and people replied to that post there are comments. They didn’t necessarily reply to you.
