The movie is primarily about navigating conflicting cultures while coming of age. What makes it fun to watch are the sparkling performances and the lack of bad guys. All of the characters are three-dimensional. The two female leads have a fascinating relationship and are just plain fun to watch.

Who wants to cook Aloo Gobi when you can bend a ball like Beckham?

Me? It’s fucking delicious. Even better with mutter.

oh. I’ve never seen that movie and I thought this post was a joke because I thought the movie bend It like Beckham was literally about David Beckham being a soccer professional.

Right? I have never seen it advertised in this context, it’s about 2 teenage girls and some old ladies dressed in middle eastern robes? WTF

old ladies dressed in middle eastern robes?

          🤣

It’s about an english girl with heritage from the indian subcontinent wanting to be a professional football player, and she can “bend it like beckham” (take a free kick where the ball flies through the air in a curved path, instead of a straight one)

Source : what I remember from seeing this film WHEN IT CAME OUT IN THEATERS. I am that old. please dig my grave for me.

I didn’t even realize it was that old. I was a whole-ass adult working in my first career when that came out.

For whatever reason I had it in my brain that it came out after 2010.

Why do you think this means you’re old and need your grave dug?

Anyway I’m pretty sure this movie was originally advertised as being about David Beckham the blonde soccer player. And I’m pretty sure that’s how they lured audiences into theaters.

This movie is the first time I heard the word “lesbian” and my mom REFUSED to tell me what it meant except that it was “not in gods plan”. Jokes on her, she has multiple lesbian daughters now.

    Thanks Bend it like Beckham!

The young woman on the left comes from a conservative (I think Muslim) family that doesn’t like her playing soccer. The movie is about her navigating the pressure. It’s been a while but I remember it being pretty good

Sikh family, but broadly speaking you got it. It’s a really nice coming of age movie that passes the Bechdel test easily (there is a hint of boy drama, IIRC, just not out of proportion to being a teenager), and it’s also a very accurate slice of life portrait for English Sikhs, if my experiences with my wife’s extended family are any indication.

IIRC the original plan was for them to be gay, but the studio nixed it. It’s a good movie, but damn I wish that had happened; would have been great for me to have a movie like that back then

The main thing I remember about this film was how awful Kiera Knightley’s performance was. I couldn’t believe it when I saw she got pirates - didn’t understand how she could ever get a job at all!
