    displacing oil would require more of various non-renewable resources than exist on Earth.

    If you mean then exists on earth now. Sure but that is sorta the point.

    If you mean that is available to be used. Your talking out your rear.

    All energy hitting earth from the sun (and all energy we ever had comes from the sun in some form ) is 173000 terabytes. That is 10000 times our current use. So even with low efficency the energy is there if we wish to fund development.
