My daughter asked me who Jesse Ventura was, I told her as a politician he’s a guy who would say something like

“everyone in this country deserves healthcare, they deserve unions and they deserve the chance to succeed! Every family should be able to live without constantly struggling, every person in this country should be cared for, except for the lizard people who pretend to be Patriots, but as we all know, are actually aliens from a demon realm controlled by a cabal of wealthy donors, including Hulk Hogan!”

I have a few irl friends who really like RFK Jr. and it’s a really interesting dynamic. Because they’re almost exclusively just kind of like… dude bros who do not really pay attention to politics… but RFK phrases almost everything he does so vaguely and ephemerally that I think it tricks people into thinking he’s got it all figured out.

Like Joe Biden and even Donald Trump typically will list some specific policies or actions they want to do to reach a goal. Subsidize EVs to combat climate change, provide federal funding to make community college free, build the wall, whatever. RFK almost exclusively just says “we…. Should make housing…. Cheaper and more available… and also…? It’s time we end all the unjust violence…”

It’s all just such vague platitudes that I think people see just that and think “wow, he’s the only sane candidate!”

Then you dive into his actual views and it’s like… ‘antidepressants actually cause school shootings’

Tangential note but where do people stand on overprescribing medications that essentially numb or alter the mind in perhaps unexpected ways?

I think of the fact that 1/3+ of the country is modifying their brain’s chemistry from doctors routinely receiving kickbacks from pharmaceuticals and it absolutely terrifies me.

From lithium to benzos to stimulants like Ritalin to Adderall… I really hope the medical industry knows what it’s doing.

But then I think about how oxy was massively over prescribed and I have my doubts. I don’t think this is a conspiracy theory as much as a genuine concern with a historical pattern of abuse from the industry. I fear we are all masking symptoms rather than identifying and resolving root causes at the societal and individual level.

Without trying to sound like a lunatic, this has been covered by reputable outlets like PBS Frontline with The Medicated Child.

I just came from a soccer game with my toddler. Toddler. And parents are already threatening their kids if they stop running off the field to get a drink of water, screaming at their kid. I think about how many lazy fucks shouldn’t be parents and project their own laziness on their child and manifest a problem. Eg, “my child isn’t being obedient enough; they don’t want to sit still!” echoing this Sir Ken Robinson’s Ted Talk School Kills Creativity reflects my sentiment.

I don’t know…it’s just been on my mind.

As a coincidence, much of my degree is about essentially the very topic you’re describing.

The TL;DR of it is that yes, a lot of people (and children especially) are getting diagnosed with things they probably don’t really need to be diagnosed with. Especially recently autism is a really big one. People see their 5 year old act like a 5 year old and think “wow, I didn’t act like that! There must be something wrong with little Tommy here where he’s such a picky eater and he doesn’t do what I say sometimes and lashes out.”. It’s very easy to ‘shop around’ 3 or so different doctors and eventually find one that will get you the diagnosis you might consciously or subconsciously want. This isn’t limited to children, as a lot of teens and adults also often go “wow, I feel so awkward around people I don’t know, like I truly can’t relate to them. Sometimes I have weird habits and thoughts I don’t like.” And then they ‘shop’ for this diagnosis to have.

ADHD is similar, just swap out traits associated with autism for things like “I can’t pay attention! It’s hard for me to just sit down and write a 15 page paper!” “I want to study for 5 hours straight but just can’t sit still!l When, yeah. Of course. Doing that just blows.

Experts in this stuff acknowledge these patterns (in more formal wording) but the question is just… how do you combat it? I’m of the opinion that it’s not like doctors are being bought off en masse, they simply don’t see their patients all that much. All they have to go off of is the one hour or whatever that someone shouts their symptoms, and some doctors would rather have more false positives and others would rather have false negatives.

I really don’t know how you deal with it in a way that isn’t just like “stigmatize mental illness again” because obviously we don’t want that either. It’s a tough problem.

This is very enlightening! How do I make am attempt at avoiding shopping around (for any medical issue)? I didn’t exactly grow up with the most medical-care-minded parents, so I’m really starting from nothing here

Thanks for this great comment. You described what I felt far more eloquently than I did. I’m not sure where the middle ground is between justifiable medication versus identifying problems of society or parenting. I’m just glad I’m not alone in recognizing that the problem is out there and smarter minds than me are hopefully trying to address it.

I think something the other poster’s comment (as fantastic as it was) didn’t touch on was that antidepressants are also being prescribed to treat symptoms of societal collapse. Poverty, wage slavery, lack of access to basic amenities and necessities, lack of access to secure income, economic divide, societal divide and many other factors are becoming more common and driving some of this apparent need for antidepressants. There’s a genuine mental health crisis - not of people who are born with issues of neurochemistry that need to be alleviated with medication but people whose needs are going unmet so they become depressed. Quality of life, and perceived quality of life, are strong protective factors against the development of many mental illnesses.

One of the alarming side effects of this clickbait environment, empowered and weaponized mental illness, exploited by those who benefit from chaos, enabled and boosted by those who should know better yet cannot help themselves.

I unfortunately found myself listening to the Joe Rogan podcast with Aaron recently. He has some pretty interesting takes… I thought he was just weird about the vaccine but he has many more “opinions.”

Apparently at the Chicago world’s fair the building roofs were able to generate unlimited energy but big energy companies suppressed the info lol. NGL at some point it was so ridiculous that it was actually kinda entertaining. Even Joe fact checked him a couple times lol.

Man, I just tried to watch Katt Williams’ episode recently because Katt called Rogan out for propping up unfunny comedians a month or so ago. Between the two of them, it was like they were trying to 1-up each other for the title of world’s biggest dumbass. I couldn’t make it past 30 minutes or so. It was painful to listen to.

Rogan lost his appeal when he became way too involved and way too political. When he was asking master beekeepers and weed experts shit was funny. When it was this kooky idea of a pool cleaning guru that invented a mushroom cleaner, you have a formula for freaks that are cool in their own skin.

He lost it when he took it too seriously and now it just sucks.

If you ever want to see your lady friends laugh for all the wrong reasons, show them some Katt Williams bits where he tries to give sex advice.

I’m pretty sure he’s serious as hell about them too…

Oh man that sucks. I mean we all knew Aaron Rodgers was a giant asshole so that one is not surprising, but Jesse Ventura? That’s a bummer.

Ventura has been a conspiracy theorist for a while (of the non-malignant kind, think space aliens style that was more prevalent pre MAGA), but he never seemed like a giant asshole. He was invited to the weed legalization signing last year here in Minnesota. And he did a few good things here as governor. I’m surprised he hasn’t noped out of this clown show even if he is a (seemingly self aware) clown.

Does A-A-Ron ever experience the “shut up and play ball” or does he get a pass because he’s white?

Travis Kelce is proof that being white isn’t enough to get you a pass. White right wing athletes get a pass. They’re on opposite sides of the same issue and rodgers is much more vocal about it, but he’s not the one being told to “shut up and play ball.”

I was about to ask what in the world Kelce has spoken out on politically, then I got sad realizing it’s vaccines and it was a 10 second commercial compared to…how many hours has Rogers spent vomitting his butter diet to Joe Rogan?
