Tech’s broken promises: Streaming is now just as expensive and confusing as cable. Ubers cost as much as taxis. And the cloud is no longer cheap::Some tech is getting pricier and looking a lot like the older services it was supposed to beat. From video streaming to ride-hailing and cloud computing.
Cloud was never really cheap. People just didn’t understand the total cost involved, and companies are finally beginning to realize that on prem wasn’t actually a problem.
Cloud has been cheap in that it allowed you to scale much cheaper than you could otherwise, and this isn’t debatable in any way. Cloud is the bang for your buck champion and it’s not even close.
It’s the bang for you buck situation in some limited circumstances, but not the way most people are using it.
It’s not “some limited circumstances” though. The cost of an equivalent server and setup to host locally for even a tiny website or service is significantly higher than running on the cloud even for a few years.
