Idk why I never heard of this one before but it got an update recently so it appeared in my Droid-ify feed and now I’m sharing it. Hopefully someone finds it useful.
Use this as daily driver, can recommend
Or you can try The calyxOS Dialer. It’s little bit different than AOSP Dialer. To get it add calyx institute Fdroid repo on droid-ify and install it from there.
you probably heard of “simple dialer”. Fossify apps are forks of simple (because simple is sold to an advertisement company)
long story short 👆
Damn, I didn’t know! When did that happen? By the way, I’ve just noticed that the Simple apps haven’t been updated for about a year.
Fdroid version is old because their newer versions are not open source anymore. So don’t use them
Oh, so theycve abandoned the open source version :( I’m switching all my simple apps to Fossify.
export from simple, import to fossify
at least the switch is easy :)
Real sad what happened there.
Yes, I get that people need to eat, but goddamn it man THERE ARE OTHER WAYS TO EAT THAN BETRAYING YOUR PRINCIPLES (not to mention your users).
at least push one last update that warns the users
I don’t believe that the lack of a warning was an honest mistake. 😉
Best we can do is remember the name “Tibor Kaputa” and avoid his apps that might pop up in the future. 🕳
Exactly!
What bothers me is that there is no way to answer a call using the phone when BT earphones are connected. It’s 2024, how’s that possible? It happens that I leave them in another room and I may forget that they are connected and when I answer I don’t ear anything, damnit!
By the way, even though I’ve always wandered why changing the dialer, I’m gonna try it!
The stupid thing is that the aosp dailer is great
It’s discontinued though.
Oh right, only a matter of time before google makes android even less backwards compatible. To be fair tho, there’s not much about a dailer to be updated
there’s not much about a dailer to be updated
Well security and UI are important.
Security, yes. Let’s hope there aren’t nay cve’s found in it. ui… meh, I’ve had the same style dailer for over a decade
I used this for a while, but every time my phone rang I had to type in my pin to answer it which was a deal breaker for me.
Hmm I’m not sure if it’s the expected behavior. Probably you didn’t have some permissions enabled?
Could be. I do remember trying to get it to work a number of ways at the time. If you’re telling me that this isn’t the case for you though, I might try it out again.
it isn’t the case for me
I haven’t tried the app much myself. I’ll try it later and tell you if I have time.
Well I just tried it again, and while it won’t let me take a screen shot on the lock screen, it’s definitely still the case for me. It just sits there ringing with the pattern lock on the screen and a little “Return to call” button at the bottom of the screen.
Hmm I guess we found a reason why there are almost no dialer apps for Android.
Is there some obstacle to writing them? Special SDK privileges or anything like that? Seems like a good thing to degoogle if possible.
I have no idea but apparently nobody makes dialer apps. What’s even more weird is that SMS and contacts apps are way less rare.
Contacts and dialer should maybe be merged. It’s nice to be able to call someone and make notes in that person’s contact page during the call.
Don’t remember seeing contacts and dialer being completely merged. Maybe it’s for performance reasons idk.
There is Open Contacts which also acts as a dialer if you want it too. It creates its own database which could be useful if you don’t want other apps to have your contacts.
It works fine, I use that or Koler
iirc, out of the box android contacts was also the dialer
We have supercomputers in our phones. They can handle it.
Wrong approach, mister/miss.
please tell me if you find any open source MMS apps (was more relevant pre RCS, but I still want to see how to actually do it)
